Dealing with rust on your car

So you find a little rust on your car and you can’t exactly afford to trade it in and purchase a new car or take your car in to have it professionally refinished, what do you do? You can fix small rust areas with a little personal time. The longer you wait to deal with the rust the less likely you will be able to deal with it on your own.

The first thing you need to do is remove the rust and clean the metal with a grinder. I like using a medium grit sandpaper first since I don't want to be very agressive on the small spots. If you take too much metal off you will have a different problem on your hands, which you won't be able to handle. Once you have most of the rust and pitting out, you have to move to a finer grit to get the last bit off.

Next you will have to apply Bondo to fill in where the metal was ground off. This is similar to filling in spackling on a wall. You want to apply it let it dry, and then carefully sand it until it is even with the other metal around it. Then you want to prime the area where the bondo was applied. Sand with a fine sand paper after you have primed to take off any drips or imprefections.

You will then have to head to your local automotive store and find a paint that matches your make and model of vehicle. They often can help you find the specific paint you need. Once you have the desired layers of paint on you will want to add a clear coat. Once everything has had a chance to dry, buff and wax just as you normally would. If you did the job correctly the fix should last for a long time.
